Maille (or chainmaille as it is more commonly but less accurately known) is one of those things that people ignore until they touch it. Then they become strangely addicted to it and can't stop feeling it... it's all quite worrying! It's just impossible to stop touching and once you learn to make it it's even better.... so what are you waiting for? From here there's a few links to other pages on maille and to some other sites that I've found particularly useful.
Useful that is, at helping me with archaeology coursework. I'm doing a project on maille, it's evolution and why it went out of use. As a part of it I have to make maille then test it against a variety of weapons to see the protection it offered the person wearing it. I started making the maille and couldn't stop, so now I have piles of the stuff, but I'm sure I'll find something to do with it.
As well as being quite useful for saving lives and all that, maille's fast becoming a bit of a fashion accessory. At the minute I'm working on a bag for the significant other of my partner in crime here at this site, and a T-shirt (not sure where I'll wear it, but hell, it'll be fun). So it's pretty versatile, I have had someone wearing my maille skirt as a scarf, but since it weighs around 7kgs that didn't last long.
A bit about maille's long, long history.
The results of my testing of the maille for my coursework.
For all those of you who'd like to have a go yourselves.
Here's a few of the sites that I have found useful.
More will be here soon, just bear with me, coursework has to be in in three weeks!!
